This is the first Stone Roses DVD. Of the four elements, the videos are perhaps the least noteworthy, being mostly rudimentary band-in-performance stuff. Previously unseen concert footage from a 1989 Blackpool gig is more evocative of the moment the group reintroduced guitars and swagger into the music scene. The outstanding material, however, is on disc two. This gives us a selection of the Roses’ television appearances, including the infamous occasion when the power went down on the Late Show; “Amateurs!” shouts Ian Brown as the nervous presenter tries to link to the next item while pretending there isn’t a bunch of angry musicians behind her. The most riveting footage, though, must be the cringingly awful, and cruelly unedited, interview with singer Brown and guitarist John Squire, where a typical answer to a question runs more or less on these lines; Brown: “Er, um, John?” Squire: “Um, er, Ian?” Ricky Gervais couldn’t have scripted it better.Buy for £14.99 or less, including postage and packaging, before July 26.
